💬 FROM ME TO YOU…
It’s finally May! The city is awake with springtime. The dogwoods have done their thing, the patios are packed, and Richmond is in that sweet spot between “finally warm” and “not yet oppressively humid.” We have maybe six more weeks before everyone’s complaining about the heat, so let’s enjoy this while it lasts.
This month’s newsletter is a little bit of everything — which, honestly, feels appropriate for May. I’ve got a roundup of events worth putting on your calendar, a proper love letter to Carytown because it deserves one, a recipe that will genuinely change your lunch game (dense bean salad — I know, I know, just trust me), and I’ve even tucked in a book recommendation that I can’t stop talking about.
Thanks for being here. I hope May treats you well. And if you have real estate questions, you know where to find me. (Just reply to this email.)
What’s Happening in RVA
After months of cold and grey, the river comes alive, the parks fill up, and suddenly there’s something worth getting off the couch for nearly every single weekend. Whether you’re into hot air balloons drifting over the Museum District, local artists lining the streets of the Fan, or just wandering through Byrd Park with a funnel cake in hand, this month has you covered.
From the return of Riverrock on the James to the grand reopening of Maymont’s Wildlife Trail, May 2025 is stacked with things to do, and that’s BEFORE you factor in Greek food, comic cons, ballet, beer festivals, and a musical that asks what would’ve happened if Juliet just… didn’t. Here’s everything worth circling on your calendar this month.

📍 Spotlight on Carytown
Carytown has been Richmond’s “mile of style” since before it was even called Carytown, and the history of how this one-mile strip on West Cary Street survived a Depression-era slump, rebranded itself in the 1970s, and became one of the most beloved neighborhoods in the city is a better story than most people know. This week on the blog, I’m digging into that history, talking about the Byrd Theatre (which deserves a lot more than the two sentences it usually gets), and being honest about the conversation Carytown is currently having with itself about chains, character, and what comes next. Plus Can Can, Bev’s, Plan 9 Records, and why this neighborhood is still one of the best places to live in RVA. Come take a walk!

🍴 What I’m Cooking Right Now
Are you always trying to hit your protein goals? (Yes. I’m in that phase of life.)
I recently read the book The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter (10/10, 5 stars, highly recommend; I absolutely loved this book), and in it, he talks a lot about Dr. Trevor Kashey. He’s a biochemist and nutrition scientist who turned his research background into a highly practical, no-nonsense approach to eating for performance and body composition.
I’m currently doing his Kickstart program, and I’m pretty impressed so far (and down 11 pounds!). So, while I’m eating a lot of chicken, vegetables, and a little rice most days, it’s also a great reminder to be prepared with nutrient-rich “good” choices, and Dense Bean Salad is one of my favorites. Great meal prep salad, because it never gets soggy, and it’s loaded with stuff that’s good and good for you! Bonus, you can endlessly change it up to your taste. Protein! Fiber! Antioxidants! Deliciousness!
